How to Implement Oils Into Your Skincare Routine
The use of oils in skincare is nothing new, it was believed that Cleopatra herself wore a form of papyrus oil as part of her beauty regimen! If you know anything about skincare you have probably at least heard of facial oils. You’ve also probably seen the abundant amount of them on the market. It can be intimidating to make sure you pick out the right one for you. A lot of people are hesitant to use face oils because they don’t know how they can benefit their skin or think that oils will make them break out.
It’s important to find the right kind of oil depending on your skin type and concerns. And yes, even people with oily skin can use facial oils! There are endless benefits you can get from using oils. If you’d like to learn more about implementing face oils in your skincare routine, keep reading!
Choosing the Right Oil
First of all, no matter what type of skin you have, you need to make sure the oil you get doesn’t clog your pores. Oils such as coconut oil are known for being comedogenic, which means that the molecular size of the oil is too big and will clog your pores which can lead to breakouts. Lighter oils will seep into the skin quickly and won't clog your pores. It’s important to research the ingredients before you buy a product to make sure none of them are comedogenic.
If you tend to have drier skin, you may like marula, squalane, blue lotus, or rose oil. They are best at locking in moisture and protecting the skin barrier.
If you have oily or acne prone skin, you should use light and clarifying oils such as squalene, tea tree, or jojoba oil. These ingredients kill acne causing bacteria and get rid of dead skin cells. If you have acne that means that your water to oil ratio is off balance. Therefore, the face oil you use should help diminish your own oil production to even things out.
If you’re looking for an anti-aging oil, you should try blue lotus, rose, sunflower, or retinol oil.
How to Use Facial Oils
There seems to be a lot of confusion around how to use facial oils. Facial oils seal all products underneath it and work as a protective layer. It is best to use them as the last step in your skincare routine, after your moisturizer but before SPF if putting it on in the morning.
It is also best to wash and exfoliate your skin before putting oils on so they can really seep into your skin. When applying, you just need 2-4 drops of face oil to avoid greasiness. A high-quality face oil shouldn’t leave your skin feeling greasy at all if you apply the right amount. You should use oils both morning and night for the best results.
When trying out new oils, it can be exciting, and you may want to try many in a short period of time. However, to be safe, only add one product to your routine at a time and see how your skin reacts. That way you can be sure the changes in your skin were brought upon by the new product, and you don’t have to play any guessing games about which product is bothering your skin.
If irritation occurs with a new oil, then you should stop using it immediately and wait about a week to let your skin recover before trying something new. Skincare is a lot of trial and error to figure out what works best for you. It can be very rewarding once you achieve that dewy glow!
